A Pin Pad is a numeric key pad a consumer uses to enter a personal identification number (PIN) when paying by Debit Card at a retail merchant. In a retail purchase the PIN serves as the customer’s signature; in fact, it eliminates the need for a signature in electronic Point of Sale transactions. A correctly entered PIN approves the sale and the transfer of funds from the customer’s account to the retailer’s account. An incorrect PIN invalidates the transaction. There are various manufacturers of credit card point of sale terminals, and these terminals require the correct pin pads to operate. The current pin pads all use TDES encryption.
